2023 Fall Season
- Flight of the Dragon
In the form of a ballet, this show is a tapestry of fantasy imagery with themes of self-discovery,
struggle, familial love, and triumph.Â
The primary image is a young dragon who comes of age and joins an ancient order of guardians
protecting a mythical dynasty.Â
The music features notable leitmotifs, pentatonic scales, open-5th harmonies, primarily minor
modalities, and punctuated group rhythmic figures.
Part I - “Awakeningâ€
A mystical world where a young dragon takes flight and begins a journey of self-
discovery. The dragon comes upon an ancient realm protected by “The Order of Fire,†a
fraternity of dragons and human warriors who defend the kingdomÂ
Part II - “The Battleâ€
Having completed training, the young dragon takes flight with their comrades as an
invading force threatens the realm. The battle rages, friends are lost, but the kingdom repels the
invaders. The young dragon discovers a newfound confidence and loyalty to the “Order of Fire.â€
Part III - “Elegyâ€
A ritual memorial procession to honor fallen comrades. The young dragon and fellow
guardians proceed in formation to pay their respects.
Part IV - “Triumphâ€
The kingdom celebrates the victory, the guardian dragons soar overhead amidst
fireworks, and the new hero revels in good fortune and sense of belonging.
Musical Selections
Flight of the Dragon is a four-part musical narrative about a young dragon coming of age as a
warrior who defends an ancient kingdom. The four parts are:
