2023 Fall Season

Medusa

Medusa explores the personality and life of the mythical underworld goddess. Beautiful, dangerous, powerful and yet a tragic figure – these are just some of the words used to describe Medusa. Such is her appeal that she terrifies and awes at the same time. Yet while many see Medusa as a monster, her story shows her as a victim of lust and injustice. Her undeniable appeal will live on as her story is told from one generation to another.

Musical Selections

Mvt. 1: "Poseidon Lures Medusa" offers hints of Middle Eastern music to set the mood for the show. One hears the character Poseidon conveying his irresistible desire for Medusa. The warrior goddess Athena witnesses Poseidon's seduction of Medusa in Athena's Temple thereby desecrating Athena's Temple.

Mvt. 2: "Athena's Rage" highlights the ruthless fury of Medusa's antagonist as she directs her uncontrollable anger towards obliterating Medusa. The music is disjointed and dissonant to heighten the drama of the irrepressible anger, establishing the main theme of the show.

Mvt. 3: "Serpents" captures Medusa's transformation into a hideous snake-headed monster. A slower groove overlaps the main theme. There is a direct segue into "Medusa's Revenge"

Mvt. 4: "Medusa's Revenge" is a fast and furious piece. This movement focuses on Medusa's newly discovered power that could turn to stone those who dared look at her and her bizarre head of live venomous snakes. The edgy music slithers through the lush harmonies and pulsating rhythms of ancient times, striking out-when least expected-like a coiled serpent to emphasize Medusa's menacing anxiety.
