Lamar Burkhalter has been an active percussion educator, clinician, arranger, and performer for the past 38 years. He currently serves as percussion faculty at Lone Star College – University Park, Houston, Texas and serves as a full-time marching and concert band clinician/consultant around the nation. In addition, he has served as the Music Director for the NFL Houston Texans, “Deep Steel Thunder†since its inception in 2002 to present. He recently served as the Music Director for Super Bowl LIVE, “Houston LIVE†in February of 2017 and as the percussion entertainment director for the 2017 MLB Astros ALDS, ALCS and World Series games in Houston, Texas. In 1986, Mr. Burkhalter was the drumline instructor for the U.S. Olympic Festival Band held in the Astrodome, Houston, Texas.
Mr. Burkhalter is also the Founder/Executive Director of the Percussion One Foundation, a 501(c) 3 non-profit organization. This renowned Houston based independent percussion group has performed at various venues in the Houston area including the NFL Houston Texans, NBA Houston Rockets, AdvoCare 100 Texas Bowl, MLB Astros, MLS Dynamo, Houston Symphony, Society for the Performing Arts and corporate and city-wide events. Under his direction this group won the Percussive Arts Society’s “Call for Tapes" in 1997. Percussion One has previously performed a 10-day concert tour of Moscow, Russia and at the World Expo in Hanover, Germany in the summer of 2000. Percussion One also performed a two-week concert tour of Sydney and Melbourne, Australia in July of 2015 to include performances in the Sydney Opera House, Melbourne University and at the Australian National Academy of Music with marimba artist, Wei Chin, and the members of the Melbourne University and ANAM studios. During this trip, Mr. Burkhalter also served as an adjudicator for the Australian Marimba Competition.
Mr. Burkhalter also currently serves as the Band Committee Chairman for the TaxAct “Texas Bowlâ€, held each year in December in NRG Stadium, Houston, Texas and over the past 16 years he has been awarded the “President’s Award†on three occasions, for his volunteer contributions. He has also previously served as Director of Events for the NCAA EV1.net Houston Bowl and as a writer, producer, and director for Six Flags/Astroworld and for Sea World of Texas.
Mr. Burkhalter’s previous experience includes serving as the Percussion Director of the award-winning Westfield HS Band, which includes the national high school division winner of PASIC's "Call for Tapes," in 1989 and 1994, and five (5) 5A State Marching Band Championships. He has extensive teaching and arranging experience with numerous Drum and Bugle Corps including the Troopers, Sky Ryders, and Blue Knights.
Mr. Burkhalter has served as percussion instructor for the Stephen F. Austin State University and the University of Houston marching bands. He has also served as artist in residence for the University of Florida, Kansas State University, West Texas A and M University and recently in residence at the University of Oklahoma.
In addition, he has served as a clinician/performer for the Texas Bandmasters' Association, Texas Music Educators Association, the Percussive Arts Society and the Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic on numerous occasions for each institution.
N8RHYTHM, Mr. Burkhalter’s percussion education and performance-based company, presents numerous marching percussion camps, clinics, performances and drum circle events around Texas and the Southwest.
Mr. Burkhalter is endorsed by the Yamaha Corporation of America and in 2014 received the prestigious Yamaha Legacy Award which “recognizes the contributions of distinguished figures in the field of music and music education.†and is one of the longest running percussion artists in the country on the Yamaha artist roster.
Mr. Burkhalter has also been endorsed by Evans Drumheads, Zildjian Cymbals, Vic Firth Sticks & Mallets and the Latin Percussion Music Group for over 25 years. He also has many of his compositions published by Rowloff Productions.
