Cheryl Polenick has recently retired as the the Director of Bands at Socastee High School in Myrtle Beach where she taught since 2006. During this time, the Braves Band achieved numerous successes in Marching and Pageantry Arts, Symphonic Band and Jazz Band/Jazz Combo amassing consistent superior ratings with distinction since 2007. The Socastee Braves Band was awarded the Outstanding Performance Award multiple times and the bands were selected to perform at South Carolina Music Educators Conference in 2012/2013. Ms. Polenick was awarded the Jazz Educator of the Year award in 2012. Under the direction of Ms. Polenick, all aspects of the band program successfully achieved at the highest national levels including participation in Winterguard International, where the guard achieved state champion status four times since 2010. The band participated in all South Carolina Band Directors Association events and regularly placed the lion’s share of musicians in all county events. Starting her musical career as a 14-year-old in the Erie Thunderbirds, Cheryl progressed from a corps member to instructor with groups like the 12th Command (Taylor, Michigan), The Bandettes (Sault Ste Marie, Ontario), Northern Aurora, (Saginaw, Michigan) and Kiwanis Kavaliers (Kitchener, Ontario). Cheryl quickly moved up within the DCI judging ranks and judged all brass and music captions. Cheryl is proud to be affiliated with WGI, DCI, MSBOA, ISSMA, SCBDA, OMEA, USBANDS and many other pageantry and festival organizations across the country. Ms. Polenick received her Bachelor of Music Education in trumpet performance from Carnegie-Mellon University. She holds a Master of Music Education from Michigan and a Masters in Secondary Education from GCU. She has been awarded additional certificates in IB Music and Kodaly and enjoyed her affiliation with YME. Ms. Polenick is recently retired after a successful teaching career spanning 40 years and has taught, directed, and judged throughout the East Coast and Mid-West. She lives in Myrtle Beach with her husband Lenny Bello. They have two giant Mioritic Sheep Dogs named Peter Pan and Wendy Darling. Cheryl still enjoys teaching and directing and directs the Paulies Island Jazz Ensemble and the Paulies Island Community Band. She plays in numerous ensembles and helps instruct several bands throughout the Low Country in South Carolina. She spends free time in her garden, reading or at the beach.
