Dr. Jimmy Nowell

Dr. Jimmy Nowell, a native of Corpus Christi, Texas, holds a Bachelor of Music Education degree from Baylor University, a Master of Music Performance from Rice University, a Master of Education in Educational Leadership, and a Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership from the University of Houston. Notably, he is a former Baylor University Drum Major and a skilled trombonist, having performed at Rice University's Shepherd School of Music and with various bands and orchestras across the state of Texas. Currently, Dr. Nowell serves as adjunct faculty with Sam Houston State University in the College of Education.

Throughout his career, Dr. Nowell has made significant contributions to the field of music education and administration. He has worked in several school districts, including Pasadena, Cypress-Fairbanks, Pearland, and New Caney ISDs. One of his notable achievements came in 2002 when he served as the associate band director at Langham Creek High School and played a crucial role in leading the symphonic band to win the Texas Music Educators Association’s Class 5A state honor band competition. Additionally, Dr. Nowell's concert and marching bands consistently earned sweepstakes awards in Texas University Interscholastic League competitions, achieved finalist status, secured championship awards in marching, and received numerous accolades at Bands of America and USBands contests between 1995 and 2022. Dr. Nowell's marching bands advanced to the UIL Texas State Marching Championships on three occasions: with the Langham Creek Lobo Marching Band in 2002, with the Porter Spartan Marching Band in 2019, and once more with Porter in 2021, winning the UIL Area I 5A Marching Championship. In the spring of 2021, the Porter High School Wind Ensemble earned recognition as a commended winner in 5A for the Mark of Excellence National Wind Band Honors program.

Beyond his roles in education, Dr. Nowell is an active clinician who works with bands at all levels. He also serves as a consultant for Stadium Creations and the Docentus Group. Dr. Nowell holds professional memberships with the Texas Music Adjudicators Association, Texas Music Educators Association, Texas Association of Secondary School Principals, Texas Association of School Administrators, and the Gulf Coast Administrators of Special Education.

In addition to his educational pursuits, Dr. Nowell has held various administrative positions in the Houston area, including high school assistant principal, middle school building principal, and administrator for special education and fine arts. He finds great satisfaction in research, presenting at professional conferences, writing, and his passion for the marching arts. Outside of his professional life, Dr. Nowell enjoys spending quality time with his dog, Jax.
