Russ Brown: Band Director, Adjudicator, Clinician and performer.
My philosophy is and has always been, “it’s about the kids.†While I have always pushed my ensembles to be the best at everything they do, I believe if you take care of the kids, the kids will take care of excellence.
I have been fortunate to have been able to spend my career working with the best people on earth; band kids. I’ve watched them progress from students learning which end of the horn to blow on to successful adults. My ex-band students are people that I can call my friends for life, even though many of them have children in band themselves, they still call me “Mr. Brown.â€
I have worked with judging panels with Texas UIL, US Bands, and many marching and concert festivals. I love seeing the results of students that have worked so hard together. I love band.
I hope to be as helpful to the bands that I judge as the adjudicators that helped me so much.
As a director my ensembles have competed in the Texas UIL State Marching Band Finals, and I’m proud to brag that my band has made finales at every show that we entered for the past 10 years, and swept captions and many events. My Groups have been part of US Bands soon after they came to Texas.
I believe marching band excellence is about music performance, and told my students many times that if you want to win then you have to play your best and music is our priority, and that visuals/marching only have to be perfect. I subscribe to the idea that movement and visuals are extensions of what you the music is telling you. Movement needs to reflect the music and music must reflect the movement.
